Dropcam – Watch your World from Anywhere

by Julie - on May 6, 2011
Every time I come home from work, my dog looks so guilty, I try to touch the pillows on the couch to see if they’re still warm, I check for tell tale signs of dog hair in the middle of my nice clean bed, all while he slinks around knowing he’s done something. I don’t know what he’s up to, but I’m just about to find out…
Meet Dropcam, the new wifi webcam that allows you to monitor video of whats going on at your home or business from anywhere, via the web or even on your mobile device. The Dropcam is very small, easy to set up and very easy to use.
Simply connect the Dropcam to your Wi-Fi network using 802.11 b/g. You can also use a wired connection with the included ethernet cable. Dropcam works with most types of consumer routers and supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption. The Dropcam sets up in a flash and because there are no technical skills required, you just need to plug it in, and you’re done. Watch a demo after the break.

Washable RFID Tags – Soon to be Tracking your Hotel Towels

by Julie - on April 27, 2011
Imagine this if you will, it’s about a week after your fabulous vacation to Miami, and you just finished washing your clothes, and all the really cool towels you stole form the pool area, when there’s a knock at your door, as you put the last towel on the shelf, the towel police take out your front door and rush up your front staircase.
Okay, thats probably not exactly how its going to happen, but thanks to a Florida company that has patented a washable radio frequency identification, or RFID, chip designed to track towels, robes and even bed sheets, at the very least, you could be getting a bill for the darn things. PhoneSheriff – Know Where your Kids are, and What they’re Doing

by Julie - on April 25, 2011
Retina-X Studios just announced the availability of PhoneSheriff for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows smartphones. This parental control service for mobile phones allows parents to monitor, filter, and restrict their children’s smartphone activities. The parent sets the software to record and block activities associated with specific numbers and it can also track locations via GPS.
PhoneSheriff is a stealth application which allows parents to see everything their kids do while on the phone, like every text message sent or received, every call dialed or received and all videos and pictures captured by the phone. Yikes! Then, parents can check the kids actions by logging onto the hidden interface on the phone itself, or in order to be extra sneaky, they can log into a secure Web panel from any Web browser to view the recorded logs and stored GPS locations. Boy I’m glad my parents didn’t have this stuff when I was a kid! Continue reading » PhoneSheriff – Know Where your Kids are, and What they’re Doing

Smile!- You’re Going to Jail

by Julie - on April 12, 2011
Some Police Departments in the U.S are going high-tech to help fight crime. They’re installing their patrol cars with automatic license plate readers or ALPR’s. These cameras read license plates of parked and moving cars — hundreds per minute and they can take pictures of the plates as they pass by. If a suspect license plate number is read, audible and visual alarms can alert the officer within milliseconds of the license plate’s capture.
The cameras can also take snapshots of the vehicle itself, along with the date, time, and location. Officials say that if conditions are right, the camera’s can even get a shot of the driver. I guess these things make for a pretty good case against the bad guy. Continue reading

Why your favorite gadgets are threatening the planet’s future

It’s safe to say that the human race is thriving. Between 1959 and 2009, the world’s population more than doubled from under three billion people to almost seven billion. While the rate of growth is expected to slow over the next four decades, Earth is expected to be home to over nine billion people by 2050. That’s a lot of people for Mother Nature to manage.
Space issues aside, the biggest concern on an over-populated planet is whether or not there will be enough resources to go around. Last week, British investor and Co-founder of Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo (GMO) Jeremy Grantham offered what Business Insider called a “startlingly depressing outlook for the future of humanity.”
Grantham opined that the world has suffered a permanent ‘paradigm shift’, where the number of people on Earth has now outstripped the planet’s ability to support us. Of course, this is nothing new – the notion of a growing global population of humans consuming a finite supply of natural resources can only lead to one end, can’t it? And this is very much why “the prices of metals, hydrocarbons (oil), and food are now beginning to reflect that”, notes Grantham.
But the purpose of this piece isn’t to tread well-worn ground about the planet’s perils. So forget about fossil fuels, drinking water, crops, ice-caps, trees and animals for now. What we’ll be looking at is all those elements that go into helping you do what you’re doing right now. Whether you’re reading this on your laptop, smartphone, tablet…or any other digital device, the natural environment has had a huge part to play in this experience.

The Robot that Loves to Clean… Sometimes.

Robotic Vacuum

Reducing workload has been a driving factor to invention for many years. From the invention of the first automatic washing machine to the microwave oven, many things have been designed in order to help the home take care of itself a little better and reduce the amount of intervention needed.
When it comes to keeping the floors clean, first there came the broom and then came the vacuum cleaner. This was more efficient but still required that a person push it around the room and put it in the right place. Finally, a vacuum was invented that would run itself.
The iRobot vacuum was designed to run in a logical pattern that would completely cover the floor and vacuum every spot. You just need to keep it fully charged, make sure it is empty and then set it loose. The machine would then do the work that would previously take you a large amount of time alone, and stop when it was finished.
The iRobot didn’t work so well on hard floors, as it was meant for dry use. Still, in time that was addressed with other models being released that could. The Mint cleaner in particular is well suited as a wet and dry hard floor cleaner that has sensors to tell it when it is at the top of the stairs, or near another obstacle so that it turns back instead of falling.
Dyson created an offering that was smart enough to learn a room layout, know when it had completed cleaning the floor and return to it’s charging point. Others were designed to look like cars, bringing a fun element to them.
The latest of these robotic cleaners released isn’t quite as useful as the others. The Dust Ball makes sense conceptually, in that being a ball it is able to move easily from one area to another. There are less problems with it getting stuck at the edge of a raised carpet like a wheeled machine may do, but then its ability to clean is very limited.
The Dust Ball has no edge cleaning ability. When it reaches the wall, or furniture, it’s large round size and shape means that there is a gap of several inches that it cannot reach, and hence leaves un-cleaned. Worse-there is no chance at all that it can clean under the furniture, and so you are left having to get your old styled vacuum out for that.
It does however know when it is full or needs to charge, when it will return to its docking station. A full machine will open itself ready for you to empty it, so that it can continue on.
So whilst there are now a range of robotic cleaners that are promising to lighten our load and make housework a breeze, it would seem that not all are equal. Instead, it is better to choose carefully in order to make sure that the machine that you buy is actually up to doing the job that you employ it to do.
Here are a few of the better robotic vacuum cleaners on the market now:
